SC2 New Unit Artwork

Found some cool artwork for some of the new units in Starcraft II: Heart of the Swarm, courtesy of a Russian website which might have datamined these from the HotS Beta files. =)

I really like the Tempest art. I made it my wallpaper, replacing the current Terran Battlecruiser (which I’m assuming is actually the Hyperion – Jim’s flagship).

Starcraft 2: Heart of the Swarm Battle Reports

Two new battle reports from Starcraft 2: Heart of the Swarm showcasing the latest iteration of the new units in actual multiplayer combat, commentated by Sean “D[9]” Plott and Rob Simpson of Blizzard Entertainment.

But before watching the actual battle reports, just wanted to mention that Blizzard Entertainment also released a new video showcasing the new units.

The following information on new units is taken from G4, StarCraft 2: Heart of the Swarm Multiplayer Units — An eSports Update From Blizzard posted by Kevin Kelly

Oracle: This is a harassment unit that you can use to affect the play field. It has an Entomb ability that can prevent minerals from being harvested. It can cloak all friend units and nearby buildings. And you can use it to case Preordain on an enemy or a friendly building, which will give you detection. This is a sneaky way to spy on your enemies, or quickly detect enemies in your own base.

Mothership Core: Protoss will now have the Mothership Core available immediately, and later you will be able to transform it into a full Mothership. But, it has its own abilities as well. It can only be located over a Nexus, but it can jump from that Nexus to any other Nexus. It can activate Purify, which is a powerful base defense that will be good for defending against early anti-Protoss strategies. You can use Recall which allows you to return a large number of units back to the base.  The Core also have Energy Transfer, which allows you to give energy to any unit.

Tempest: This is a heavy, expensive capital ship that can attack ground and air units, and it does single target damage. They are considering having an upgrade for the Tempest that extends the Tempest range to 22, making it the longest-ranged unit in the game. To put it in perspective, the Terran Siege Tank range is 13.

Battle Hellion: This is a transformable unit that can either be in a “speed” mode, or a “tough guy” mode, meaning you’ll need to plan your transformations accordingly. When in it’s transformed, hardened mode, it has more hit points, an area of effect cone in front of it, takes less damage, and is very effective against short-range units.

Warhound: This is an anti-vehicle unit, armed with both a primary cannon and missiles that fire every few seconds. But the trick is that the missiles only target vehicles, which is the first time that Blizzard has experimented with specific targeting. This way you don’t have to micromanage units to only target vehicles and mechs.

Widow Mine: This special unit burrows into the ground, and leaps up to attach itself to air and ground units. Once attached, it will explode after roughly ten seconds, and do 200 points of damage to the unit it was attached to, and splash damage as well. But if the unit your mine is attached to dies, the mine dies with it and won’t explode. They are considering having the ability to attach it to friendly units as well, so you could send out a suicide bomber.

Reapers: They are taking away the little bombs that the Reapers throw. Instead, they will be able to regenerate life while not in combat. This allows them to attack, check things out, and then retreat and regenerate. According to Browder, “This is the way we always hoped that Reapers would be used.

Battle Cruiser: They are experimenting with a speed boost ability that costs energy to use.

Swarm Host: This unit spawns free units: endless by burrowing into the ground and releasing locusts that can target both air and ground units. The locusts only have a timed life, but the Swarm Host can spawn them forever. This is meant to be a Zerg artillery unit that doesn’t feel anything like a Siege Tank.

Viper: This is a battlefield manipulation unit with two new abilities. Abduct: this captures targets, and pulls them towards the Viper. It is very effective against the Siege Tank, Archon, and Colossus. Blinding Cloud: this ability excretes a cloud that reduces enemy weapon range to one. Talk about your fog of war, this is the real thing.

Ultralisk: The Ultralisk now has a Burrow Charge ability that allows you to burrow into the ground, and charge forward for a fast assault.

Hydralisk: The Hydralisk is getting a speed boost while at the Hive, and according to Browder “This is the smallest change we have shown you, but it has had the largest impact on the game.” This is because it allows the Zerg to be a lot more mobile.

And now on to the battle report videos!

Protoss vs Zerg

Terran vs Zerg

I’m sure a Protoss vs Terran battle report will come along any day now… Probably later today.

Starcrft 2: Heart of the Swarm – New Multiplayer Units

Yep… I’m closely following Blizzcon. 🙂

First… a new trailer of Heart of the Swarm. The new units look awesome and badass!

Next, the new units.

Production Structure: Factory
Attacks: Air and ground
Attack Description: Constant AoE damage to air and ground when stationary, no attack when mobile
Special: Ground unit. AoE attack shuts down in the presence of friendly units.

Production Structure: Factory
Attacks: Air and ground
Attack Description: Effective anti-air with splash, small ground attack with bonus to mechanical
Special: Ground Unit. Smaller and faster than the Thor. Its anti-air range attack is also shorter. Might not be that effective against non-mechanical ground units.

Production Structure: Hatchery (requires ??)
Attacks: ?? (probably none)
Attack Description: ?? (see above)
Special: Flying Unit. Caster.
Abilities: Blinding Cloud – temporarily reduces the attack range of all ground units inside the cloud to melee range, and prevents energy-based abilities from being used; Abduct – pull any unit towards the Viper’s location; Ocular Parasite – allows friendly, non-massive units to gain the Detector ability

Swarm Host
Production Structure: Hatchery (requires ??)
Attacks: Ground
Attack Description: While burrowed, sends endless swarms but slow-moving waves of melle attackers (called Locusts)
Special: Ground Unit. Might need to be burrowed in order to attack (ala Broodwar’s Lurker)

Production Structure: Robotics Facility (??)
Attacks: Variable
Attack Description: Variable
Special: Copies a targeted non-massive unit which includes the unit’s researched and upgraded abilities. Changes only once (??). This is the uber-Changeling!

Production Structure: Stargate
Attacks: ?? (probably none)
Attack Description: ?? (see above)
Special: Flying Unit. Caster. Replaces the Mothership (??). I think it uses the Alpha Protoss Star Relic model. Also uses an old concept from one of the Overseer’s original abilities.
Abilities: Entomb – blocks workers from mining a mineral field; Preordain – grants vision of a targeted enemy building, allowing the protoss to see which units or technologies are being researched; Phase Shift – phases a target building, preventing it from being attacked, using its abilities, or granting technology. Not only can structures like missile turrets be prevented from attacking, but using this ability on a zerg Spire would block the production of Mutalisks, Corruptors, and air upgrades.

Production Structure: Stargate
Attacks: Air and ground:
Attack Description: Massive AoE damage against enemy air units and single target against ground.
Special: Replaces the Carrier (??). Old name, new model and concept. Wish they wouldn’t get rid of the Carrier. They just need to tweak it a little bit.

Now for the new and changing racial abilities…

Hellion Battlemode
Allows the Hellion to transform into a sturdier, slower version of itself. Gains a stronger flame attack that covers a short arc in front of it.

Redline Reactor
Gives the Battlecruiser a speed-boost. Has a cooldown.

Can now only make one Thors. Requires both Armory and Fusion Core to build. Bigger ground attack and has a new attack to replace its anti-air weapon – a bombardment ability that does tremendous amounts of damage in a wide AoE. The Thor will need time to set up its bombardment cannons, as well as time to repack them after an attack, much like a Siege Tank. Costs a lot to build.

Reaper’s passive HP regen
Passive health-regeneration that allows it to recharge hit points quickly when out of combat.

In addition, Reapers lost their attack with the damage bonus against buildings.

Ghost Cloak
Costs energy one time. Has a duration and cooldown. The unit will still regen energy while cloaked. Ghosts can re-cloak while nuking without interrupting the call-down

Allows Corruptors to target buildings and slowly damage them. This damage is converted into resources for the zerg at the same time.

Corruptors lose the Corruption ability.

Burrow Charge
Allows Ultralist to dive underground and instantly surface at a target, allowing them to initiate the fight faster on a crowded battlefield.

Baneling’s “tunneling claws”
Allows Banelings to move underground like Roaches and Infestors.

Hydralisk speed upgrade
Speed upgrade for the Hydralisks off of creep.

Retired Units
The Overseer has been cut; its detection ability has been replaced by the Viper and its Ocular Parasite.

Arc Shield
Nexus ability. Will temporarily grant additional shield and building armor and give the building a weapon similar to the Photon Cannon. Damages light units only

Mass Recall
Nexus ability. Telports targeted units from the battlefield to the Nexus. Units recalled are stunned for a few seconds when recalled.

Retired units
Carriers and Motherships
