Anybody seen the two-hour pilot episode? How is it? Does it have potential? Or will it be just another one of those series that’s been too hyped up and fail to deliver?
Wish it was aired here. Bummer. I’ll have to make do with lurking in Fox’s Website then.
According to the official website, the focus of the series is about the tribulations of the Shannon family, who participates in an experiment to save humanity. Terra Nova itself is an alternate Earth that is set 85 million years ago during the late Cretaceous Period.
TERRA NOVA follows an ordinary family on an incredible journey back in time to prehistoric Earth as a small part of a daring experiment to save the human race. In the year 2149, the world is dying. The planet is overdeveloped and overcrowded, with the majority of plant and animal life extinct. The future of mankind is in jeopardy, and its only hope for survival is in the distant past.
The members of the Shannon family are: Jim (Jason O’Mara), who is the “devoted father with a checkered past;” Elisabeth (Shelley Conn), Jim’s wife and a trauma surgeon who becomes the newest member of Terra Nova; Josh (Landon Liboiron), Jim and Elisabeth’s 17-year-old son “who is torn to leave life as he knows it behind” but is immediately drawn to Sky (Allison Miller); Maddy (Naomi Scott0, Josh’s 15-year-old sister who hopes to “reinvent herself” in Terra Nova; and Zoe (Alana Mansour), Jim and Elisabeth’s five-year-old daughter.
Terra Nova’s colony is lead by Commander Nathaniel Taylor, who is played by Stephen Lang (the guy who plays Colonel Miles Quaritch in the movie Avatar). There is also a rival settlement – actually, a renegade settlement – led by Mira (Christine Adams).
Some of the cast and crew:
Now, the plot – as outlined in the show’s Website – is, as already mentioned, about the Shannon family’s life at Terra Nova. Furthermore, the reason they went there is because Earth (the real one) is dying.
In the year 2149, the world is dying. The planet is overdeveloped and overcrowded, with the majority of plant and animal life extinct. The future of mankind is in jeopardy, and its only hope for survival is in the distant past.
When scientists unexpectedly discovered a fracture in time that made it possible to construct a portal into primeval history, the bold notion was born to resettle humanity in the past – a second chance to rebuild civilization and get it right this time.
Another plot item, aside from the splinter group led by Mira, is a secret that involves Zoe (she becomes some sort of messiah?!). A third one, though minor a minor one in my opinion, is the presence of dinosaurs (giant lizards are scary!) – still, it might become a bigger plot. Who knows? Maybe the dinosaurs will get smarter and stage a siege on Terra Nova’s colony!
Even more threatening than what lies outside the protective walls of the colony is the chilling possibility that something sinister is happening inside Terra Nova. The Shannons will come to suspect that not everyone on this mission has the same idea of how to best save mankind; in fact, there may be forces intent on destroying this new world before it even begins.
Dun, dun, dun… LOL!
