Starcrft 2: Heart of the Swarm – New Multiplayer Units

Yep… I’m closely following Blizzcon. :)

First… a new trailer of Heart of the Swarm. The new units look awesome and badass!

Next, the new units.

Terran

Shredder
Production Structure: Factory
Attacks: Air and ground
Attack Description: Constant AoE damage to air and ground when stationary, no attack when mobile
Special: Ground unit. AoE attack shuts down in the presence of friendly units.

Warhound
Production Structure: Factory
Attacks: Air and ground
Attack Description: Effective anti-air with splash, small ground attack with bonus to mechanical
Special: Ground Unit. Smaller and faster than the Thor. Its anti-air range attack is also shorter. Might not be that effective against non-mechanical ground units.

Zerg

Viper
Production Structure: Hatchery (requires ??)
Attacks: ?? (probably none)
Attack Description: ?? (see above)
Special: Flying Unit. Caster.
Abilities: Blinding Cloud – temporarily reduces the attack range of all ground units inside the cloud to melee range, and prevents energy-based abilities from being used; Abduct – pull any unit towards the Viper’s location; Ocular Parasite – allows friendly, non-massive units to gain the Detector ability

Swarm Host
Production Structure: Hatchery (requires ??)
Attacks: Ground
Attack Description: While burrowed, sends endless swarms but slow-moving waves of melle attackers (called Locusts)
Special: Ground Unit. Might need to be burrowed in order to attack (ala Broodwar’s Lurker)

Protoss

Replicant
Production Structure: Robotics Facility (??)
Attacks: Variable
Attack Description: Variable
Special: Copies a targeted non-massive unit which includes the unit’s researched and upgraded abilities. Changes only once (??). This is the uber-Changeling!

Oracle
Production Structure: Stargate
Attacks: ?? (probably none)
Attack Description: ?? (see above)
Special: Flying Unit. Caster. Replaces the Mothership (??). I think it uses the Alpha Protoss Star Relic model. Also uses an old concept from one of the Overseer’s original abilities.
Abilities: Entomb – blocks workers from mining a mineral field; Preordain – grants vision of a targeted enemy building, allowing the protoss to see which units or technologies are being researched; Phase Shift – phases a target building, preventing it from being attacked, using its abilities, or granting technology. Not only can structures like missile turrets be prevented from attacking, but using this ability on a zerg Spire would block the production of Mutalisks, Corruptors, and air upgrades.

Tempest
Production Structure: Stargate
Attacks: Air and ground:
Attack Description: Massive AoE damage against enemy air units and single target against ground.
Special: Replaces the Carrier (??). Old name, new model and concept. Wish they wouldn’t get rid of the Carrier. They just need to tweak it a little bit.

Now for the new and changing racial abilities…

Terran

Hellion Battlemode
Allows the Hellion to transform into a sturdier, slower version of itself. Gains a stronger flame attack that covers a short arc in front of it.

Redline Reactor
Gives the Battlecruiser a speed-boost. Has a cooldown.

Thor
Can now only make one Thors. Requires both Armory and Fusion Core to build. Bigger ground attack and has a new attack to replace its anti-air weapon – a bombardment ability that does tremendous amounts of damage in a wide AoE. The Thor will need time to set up its bombardment cannons, as well as time to repack them after an attack, much like a Siege Tank. Costs a lot to build.

Reaper’s passive HP regen
Passive health-regeneration that allows it to recharge hit points quickly when out of combat.

In addition, Reapers lost their attack with the damage bonus against buildings.

Ghost Cloak
Costs energy one time. Has a duration and cooldown. The unit will still regen energy while cloaked. Ghosts can re-cloak while nuking without interrupting the call-down

Zerg

Siphon
Allows Corruptors to target buildings and slowly damage them. This damage is converted into resources for the zerg at the same time.

Corruptors lose the Corruption ability.

Burrow Charge
Allows Ultralist to dive underground and instantly surface at a target, allowing them to initiate the fight faster on a crowded battlefield.

Baneling’s “tunneling claws”
Allows Banelings to move underground like Roaches and Infestors.

Hydralisk speed upgrade
Speed upgrade for the Hydralisks off of creep.

Retired Units
The Overseer has been cut; its detection ability has been replaced by the Viper and its Ocular Parasite.

Protoss

Arc Shield
Nexus ability. Will temporarily grant additional shield and building armor and give the building a weapon similar to the Photon Cannon. Damages light units only

Mass Recall
Nexus ability. Telports targeted units from the battlefield to the Nexus. Units recalled are stunned for a few seconds when recalled.
