The Nutshack & It’s Quiz Time!

Posted by iamjoe on May 24, 2007

Welcome to the Nutshack!

From the website’s own words: “The Nutshack is the first animated series made by Filipino-Americans, a Mexican and a black dude…with apparently zero cultural sensitivity. Featuring the voices of comedian Rex Navarrete, show creators Ramon Lopez and Jesse Hernandez. Don’t miss a minute of the off the wall adventures of Jack, Phil and the rest of the Nutshack crew as they offend all cultures, sexes and animals.

It airs on Myx every Thursday @ 1PM. Well at least I think it’s 1PM here ‘coz it says in the website that it airs 1AM EST and we all know that we’re 12 hours ahead of the US Eastern seaboard.

You get the entire first episode for free and there are trailers of the next two episodes as well.

Starcraft 2: New Units

Posted by iamjoe on May 23, 2007

Today, let’s cover some new units. Remember that the game is still on its alpha development stages, so that means nothing’s final. A lot could change over the months. I hear that Starcraft 2’s not gonna be out till next year, so that’s a long time to make some changes and balancing issues.

New Units

Zerg

Zerglings – Zerg staple. Not new. They do have a new ability though – they become powerful suicidal little monsters that turn green –*play green-eyed monster theme, right now, please* – when they are in this state. Saw a game play trailer where the controller, after killing his opponent’s units, instructed the Zerglings to form the letters GG – good game. Hahaha. These buggers also happened to be good against the mighty Protoss Colossus.

Terran

Reapers – They may look like Marines, but they are NOT Marines. They’re frogs! Hyuk hyuk… Actually, they’re the Terran’s answer to the Protoss Immortals. With their dual machine pistols, they will actually be able to go head-to-head with the Immortals and not trigger the shields of them robots. Plus, they can jump up or down different tiers of the map with their jet packs. Wohoo! Bring on the Jumpin’ Jacks!

Protoss

Zealot – Protoss staple. Not new. But, like the Zergling, has a new ability. I don’t know if it’s a passive ability or one that needs to be activated, but the Zealots I saw in the game play trailers almost always accelerates when they are about to attack. Think Marine with Stim Packs, only, the Zealots don’t lose their health while accelerating.

Immortal – Dragoons are a thing of the past. This unit is the new primary ground range support for the Protoss. They’re able to activate a near impenetrable shield when under heavy arms fire, like the siege tank’s Arclite cannon blast. The Tanks are nearly powerless against Immortals, since their heavy tank blasts activate the shields. As a contrast, Terran Reapers’ small arms fire can make short work of these guys. Power always comes with a price, you know.

Colossus – Ah… the one that I said reminds me of War of the Worlds. Well, guess what? This guy thinks so, too:

“Think of the recent film War of the Worlds and you’ll have a good idea of how this new unit looks. Their long legs allow them to easily traverse tiers of land. Equipped are a set of dual lasers that can make quick work of smaller, poorly armored units such as Zerglings.” (http://au.pc.ign.com/articles/790/790160p1.html)

Stalker – A quadruped unit which has the Blink ability similar to Warcraft 3’s Night Elf Warden hero. It’s controlled by the essence of a Dark Templar who voluntarily allowed himself to become one with the machine. These guys are good in ambushes and tracking down fleeing opponents.

Phase Prism – These things can transport Protoss units quickly across the battlefield. They’re also capable of acting as replacement Pylons, powering all structures within range should a pylon be destroyed.

Another new air unit for the Protoss – the Phoenix:

“Phoenix: New flying unit, capable of overcharging its weapons to unleash a barrage of projectile volleys. The demonstration showed four of them simultaneously initiate this ability, ravaging a swarm of Zerg Mutalisks. Players need to be careful when engaging the overcharge, as the Phoenix cannot attack or move for several seconds after performing it. Go, death blossom, go.” (http://au.pc.ign.com/articles/790/790160p1.html)

Death blossom, huh? Reminds me of Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series. In the latest book (11th) – Knife of Dreams – two of the abilities that the main character demonstrated was the ability to create Blossoms of Fire and Deathgates. Hahaha.

However, to quote Urban Dictionary, “From the movie ‘The Last Starfighter’, the Death Blossom is a uni-directional super weapon which fires all over the place, hitting everything within range. If you are taking on a whole bunch of people, you could be said to be doing a ‘Death Blossom’.” (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Death+Blossom)

On with the show…

Warp Ray – This little is guy may have a small health for the moment. But according to the author’s quote below, it increases its damage in relation to the length of time that its laser weapon has been kept firing.

“Warp Ray: Another new flying unit. These guys blast a continuous laser that increases in damage output the longer it fires. We saw a group of these things take out a Terran Battle Cruiser pretty rapidly. Though they’re effective against heavily armored foes, they can still get shredded by small arms fire, like that from Terran Marines.” (http://au.pc.ign.com/articles/790/790160p1.html)

And last but not least:

Mothership – A very expensive but very powerful unit such that only one of these can be present on the battlefield at a time. It’s got three powerful abilities, the first of which is called Time Bomb or something related to time manipulation.

“Using this [ability] surrounds the ship in a translucent spherical field capable of stopping incoming missiles. When the field times out, the missiles drop to the ground like harmless Tic-Tacs.”  (http://au.pc.ign.com/articles/790/790160p1.html)

The second ability is called the Planet Cracker. Once activated, the Mothership fires a battery of laser beams at the ground – three major ones from the ship’s extremities forming a triangle and four smaller beams from the ship’s center that move in a circular direction. While this ability is active, the Mothership can move anywhere.

The final ability is Black Hole, which tears a hole in the fabric of reality and actually sucks in whatever units surround it.

And there you have it. Quite a barrage of starships for the Protoss, it seems. But hey! It’s called Starcraft!

Shrek 3

Posted by iamjoe on May 22, 2007

I just watched Shrek 3 with my sister last Saturday. Here’s my official opinion on the movie:

Category: Movies
Genre: Animation

Well, I’d like to rate it higher, but unfortunately, I like Shrek 2 better.

Still, the movie has its good points. We’re still treated to every comic relief that Shrek, Donkey and Puss can offer. I found the first part sort of dragging and boring. Only a few laugh lines and those not that funny really. Pinilit ko lang tumawa kasi yung ibang tao tumatawa e… It sort of improved as the movie progressed.

One thing that sticks is the scene where Puss is trying on his trademark puppy-dog, cutie-cat look and it just look stupid because of one itty-bitty problem… Whoops! I won’t say anything further. I might spoil the fun.

I gave it 3 stars. *sigh*

I just hope the 3rd installment of Pirates of the Caribbean won’t be a disappointment.

Starcraft 2

Posted by iamjoe on May 21, 2007

Hell, I agree! 9 years after the release of the original one? I do believe Blizzard made a good move. And double kudos to Blizzard for featuring some of the new units of the Protoss first. Haha. I’ve always loved those mouthless, psionically-gifted bipeds. And now there are more units to play with. Wohoo! Kill, kill, kill… Okay, I’m beginning to sound like a homicidal maniac here. Better stop… wipe that drool off my chin… sit properly… try to tone down the glittering eyes full of visciousness and… ?!?!?! Oh, I thought I love playing the Protoss race. This sounds more like Terran or Zerg. Hahaha…

But let’s not get too excited. What’s in store for us, Blizzards foolish fans, at their new website for Starcraft 2?

For starters, you’re treated to an intro flash movie after the main screen loads. Then you got two trailers – the cinematic trailer and the artwork/gameply trailer. Both have their own treats to show. But I especially love the gameplay trailer. I get to see the first stages of development of the new Protoss units as well as them being in action. Hehe. You also have a variety of screenshots, artwork and wallpapers available.

The first race to be features is the Protoss and we’re treated to 5 units (one structure included) which includes the 3 new Protoss units – Immortals, Stalkers and Phase Prisms. You also have you’re regular diet of the Zealots and the first building to be featured – the Gateway, which now has an upgrade. The Immortals will be replacing the outdated Dragoons of the past, with upgraded shields and twin phase disruptors… Oh, yeah! You also have the Dark Templar version of these bad ass babies – Stalkers, which have the Blink ability, similar to Warcraft 3’s Warden of the Night Elves. Haha. Talk about recycling some ideas. Still, it might be all worth it. =)

We also have the Phase Prism which is a flying unit with the ability to temporarily act as Pylons to power up Protoss buildings. I was thinking that from Blizzard’s description of the Gateway being upgraded into a Warp Gate – with the ability to send units to a location where there’s a Protoss psionic matrix present – that it might be possible to build units in a queue and then just send them to an area where the Phase Prism has been deployed. Sort of like an Arbiter with the Recall ability turned automatically on. Geez… I’m thinking of strategies already, and the game’s not even in beta testing phase yet! Haha! Addict!

There are some good gameplay footage in this site. I’m not sure what’s that big Protoss spaceship is called that’s featured in the second video, but I’m betting it might be the Protoss Mothership. We also get to see a huge robotic, ground unit that reminds of the alien’s vehicle from War of the Worlds. Hahaha.

The Phase Prism transporting Zealots to the battlefield

Stalkers with their Blink ability in action

Immortals with their overpowered shields… Oops, sorry Blizz, I’m sure you’re gonna have the gameplay ”perfectly” balanced

War of the worlds, anyone? Hahaha… =D

Protoss Phoenix ships battling Terran Battlecruisers

Another of the new Protoss units – the Warp Ray, uhm… How come all them Protoss unit portraits look alike? Hmm… Maybe Blizz hasn’t fully developed the individual portraits yet??

More pictures from IGN here. And more description of some of the units at Blizzard’s website.

Well, enough chatter. I gotta get back to work.

Pain and pleasure

Posted by iamjoe on May 19, 2007

I enjoy pampering myself or maybe just relaxing at Starbucks or any other coffee shop in the metro (with or without company). One of those activities I used to do often (back when I was in the call center industry) was to go to Bench Fix and have my hair done (maybe get a hair spa or something). I usually did it after my shift so I could relax before going home to sleep.

The irony of it is, when the time comes to blow-dry my hair, I kinda want to go home already. That part, I could live without in the salon. I get sweaty and warm, and sometimes, my ears get slightly singed. Ouch! Makes me wonder I go back again and again. That’s why in the three years since I’ve been going to Bench Fix, half of the time, my hair was short. Haha! Must be addicted to it already!

***

Anyways, what’s a little pain if when you get to the office, there’s free pizza and sodas waiting for you? Worth all of it. Haha!

Hmm… I may have to work now that the office’s fed me. Hahaha. I really had no intention of rendering OT today. Just went to the office to check my mails and other stuff. Oh, well. Got nothing better to do on a Saturday afternoon anyways. Might as well be productive.

Hibernation

Posted by iamjoe on May 17, 2007

Well, it’s been a quiet week since last week. Haven’t really posted anything significant here. The thing is, it’s a little bit busy at work at this time and I can’t seem to find the time to concentrate long enough to come up with a good topic to post. So, bottomline? I haven’t posted anything at all. Hahaha. I did update my Holidays Special page with the addition on some info on the Chinese New Year. I plan to update that page in the weeks to come, just as soon as I got enough time.

Also, I was out of town last week. Went to famous Boracay! Wohoo!

I’m all brown and all that stuff about tan. Hahaha. Got a good soaking under th sun. Had a henna on my left shoulder, a massage one afternoon, went island hopping… Basically, all the stuff that one would done while on vacation. In short? I had a blast!!

More pictures at my Multiply site.

Anyways, I think it’s time to hibernate for a while and recharge my creative juices. For sure, I’m gonna post something about Shrek and Pirates here when I’ve seen them. It’s a promise that I’m going to make now. For every big (and small) movie I’ve seen, I’m gonna do a review of sorts. Hehe.

Ciao!

Zooming in: Shrek 3, Pirates 3, and more

Posted by iamjoe on May 7, 2007

Now that Spiderman’s showing and I’ve watched it, the long anticipation is over. You might already know how I feel and rated the movie (see my previous post). It’s time to move on. May’s got several good attractions to show followed by June, with FF4: Rise of the Silver Surfer and Harry Potter 5, and lastly on July, with Transformers and the Simpsons Movie.

Upcoming attractions this May:

Lucky You
Fracture
  –  ”Ted Crawford doesn’t think twice about committing the perfect murder against his younger wife Jennifer, whom he discovers to be cheating on him. When cops arrive at the scene, no one is more surprised than Detective Rob Nunally to see his lover, whom he never really got to know, fighting for her life. From the looks of it, the case is closed, which would work beautifully for Willy Beachum, an assistant district attorney. But Jennifer isn’t dead, and nothing else is what it seems.”  (http://www.clickthecity.com/movies/movie.asp?movid=10708)
Shrek the 3rd
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End

And once again, next month:

“It’s all ramped up for the upcoming blockbuster sequel ‘FANTASTIC FOUR: RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER’ as the superpowered group headed by Mr. Fantastic (Ioan Gruffudd) with Invisible Woman (Jessica Alba), Human Torch (Chris Evans) and The Thing (Michael Chiklis) meet their latest challenge known as the Silver Surfer (voiced by ‘Matrix’s’ Morpheus – Laurence Fishburne).  More at:  http://www.clickthecity.com/movies_article.asp?p=1643

Spidey

Story-wise – I didn’t like it that much. Just so-so. They tried to squeeze in too many strings into one thread that wasn’t exactly perfectly executed in the climax. I noticed some wild cards, too, that made me wonder why the hell did that scene just happen, or why did that character just say that out of nowhere? However, there were some good laugh scenes. Peter Parker at his usual, and Tobey Maguire fits his character quite well.

Relevance to the Comics – As far as I know, they only got one thing that goes near the original comics version. I won’t tell it here but avid Spiderman fans will know of it right away. As for the rest, I’m not that familiar with the story of the Sandman or even the entire story of Harry Osborn as the Green Goblin. Maybe others will notice other similar scenes.

Action – you get a lot of that, I promise. There are some slow scenes but you’d still enjoy Spiderman dishing it out with the Sandman. Hehe…

Overall?, not too good but not bad either. I still enjoyed the latest Spiderman movie. I think all the trailers and advertisements hyped up the movie too much to the extent that people expected or might have expected it to be mind-blowing or some such superlatives. They over-sensationalized it. That’s one danger of a third installment, or of movies that are adaptations from literary works.

Unbelievable? I Don’t think so…

Posted by iamjoe on May 2, 2007

Hahaha!

So, if I was a girl, I’d look like Keira Knightley, right? Wohoo! Can’t complain. Hahaha. Incidentally, she’s my desktop wallpaper when I ran this picture at the My Heritages site. Hihihi!
